Should we defend the Faith?

The recent debate on ABC News Nightline with Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron with the Atheists has brought out a real desire to become a Christian that truly understands my faith. Ray and Kirk did a horrible job in defending the Christian faith, they were caught off guard and didn't have answers to some of the topics asked. So I have been thinking, is it important, or how important is it for me to defend my faith. How do I defend my faith when:

Christopher Hitchens says that the is a hosts of previous deities that were born of a virgin before Christ and that the story is just a repeat of a previous concept.

Richard Dawkins confidently claims that science can answer all the questions of our existence?

When others claim that there is evidence that Jesus did not exist by stating that there are very few "actual" texts that prove the existence of Jesus.

Can I defend those claims? Is it important for me to defend these issues? I tend to think that it is, my kids are going to be entering school soon and will have a lot of questions about this stuff, they will be exposed to many worldviews and I can only hope that I can present the Christian worldview as they most valid one.

We are not called to defend the faith, we are called to preach and live it. The effects of apologetics are very overestimated. To debate an atheist is to portray that faith in Christ can be gained by external facts when in reality only the Word of God by the Spirit of God can bring a sinner to Christ.

These debates are nothing more that entertainment for the different choirs.

Hey Rick, thanks for your comment on this stale blog. What do you think Jude was saying in 1:3? Do you think I am taking this out of context?
